Truckee River

Flows have returned to normal after a wet few weeks. The Reno gauge is currently hovering just above 500cfs in Reno. With nice weather in the forecast, flows should be somewhat stable in the coming days. Water is not dirty, nor is it crystal clear. It is holding a greenish blue tint through the Nevada side. The "steelhead green" is helpful for anglers as it adds an element of stealth to our approach.  Water temperature has come up slightly and will continue to rise this week.

Attractor flies such as stonflies, eggs, and worms have been the ticket the last few days. As the water continues to clear look for small mayfly nymphs to play a bigger role. Late February and early March can be a great time to fish the Truckee. The Blue Wing Olive hatch sat on the sidelines while flows were high and muddy, but these bugs are back in play. Look for warmer afternoons on the Nevada side to produce reliable hatches over the next few weeks. Dry fly fishing will be best on days where wind is not present. Focus on the last 3-4 hours of light before sunset. If clouds roll in, these bugs can hatch for the better part of the day and give plenty of shots.

We are freshly stocked on Trout Beads for the spring bead bite. Click for beads, hooks, and pegs on our site.

Flies we suggest for the Truckee River:

BH Squirmy Worm, Squirminator, Galloup's Jig BWO, Jig TNT BWO, Perdigon, Beatis Cripple, Parachute Adams
